Alan Hargens leads a diverse group of scientists and students in the Clinical Physiology Laboratory located at the University of
California, San Diego. As part of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, our investigations focus on diagnostic, treatment, and
rehabilitation challenges that are directly applicable to clinical orthopaedics.
Research is categorized into the following areas:
Space physiology - changes following exposure to microgravity and
development of countermeasures to reduce risk of injury
Sports medicine - finding novel methods for rehabilitation and
prevention of injury in athletes
Tissue pressure - development of non-invasive measures for
pressure in muscle tissues and other compartments such as
intracranial and intraocular.
Microvascular flow- development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools
addressing sensation and disease processes
