Alan Hargens leads a diverse group of scientists and students in the Clinical Physiology Laboratory located at the University of
California, San Diego. As part of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, our investigations focus on diagnostic, treatment, and
rehabilitation challenges that are directly applicable to clinical orthopaedics.
Research is categorized into the following areas:
Space physiology and medicine
Compartment pressures in muscle and other tissues
Microcirculatory and cardiovascular function
Physiologic changes following exposure to microgravity
Locomotion and fluid flow in controlled gravity environments
(Lower Body Positive/Negative Pressure)

About the Lab
Research at UCSD
The Clinical Physiology Lab offers collaboration to hands-on research opportunities and grant applications, as well as
information about conferences and seminars. Lab personnel benefit from faculty mentoring in many areas, including writing
and presenting professional papers.
